watching out

Today's Wednesday Words is a stream of small stones by Claudia Messelodi.

If you follow PureHaiku you will already have come across Claudia as she kindly allowed me to publish some of her haiku earlier this year. Her haiku also appear regularly at a handful of stones and recently she has had a collection of her poetry published in Italy as well as winning an award.

If you haven't yet visited her blog, I would encourage you to. a stream of small stones is utterly delightful. Each haiku is perfectly composed and acts as a small stone, allowing the reader to pause, think and meditate. Claudia's observations are a delight to read and I love mulling over her phrases, lingering on the words she's chosen.

My book was published on March 28th by Arcolibri Cazzaniga Editore. It is a collection of poems that contains both poems and haiku written in English with the relative Italian translation. The work is entitled "Sky-blue Wisteria. A Poetic Journey" - "Glicini azzurri. Un viaggio poetico", and is divided into four sections : Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. In the last part of the book there are some poems exclusively written in Italian.
Furthermore, on the last few pages it is possible to find lots of interesting comments by Freya Pickard (www.dragonscaleleggings.blogspot.com) and Rachel Chown (www.aprilrainpoetry.wordpress.com) on some of the main poems of the collection.

Two weeks ago I was awarded the "Poetic Pearl" award by the theatre-culture group "Beniamino Joppolo" in Patti (Me), Sicily, for my poem "Presenza".

The poem will be consequently published by the end of this month in a poetry collection and spread to schools and libraries of the country.

Here below you can find my poem which I wrote in 2009 and dedicated to my father.

Presenza
Ti sento vicino
ti porto dentro,
ti respiro in ogni angolo
della mia domestica intimità.
La brezza leggera
le fragranze dell'estate
raccontano di te
e si fanno messaggere,
a me tanto care, troppo preziose...
così che io ti riesco ad udire,

e con lucida coscienza
nel profondo dell'essenza

Sunday promenade,
radiant smiles, kids holding hands,
at the riverside.

Snowy river banks,
opaque blue icy surface
viewed from the stone bridge.

Sleek spinning tops whirl
round a wooden rocking horse -
children's gay laughter.

Patterned carpets wait,
temporarily rolled up,
as I'm hoovering.

A bold moth wings to

Silently sitting
by the warm glow of the fire
watch the rain pour down.

On top of the hedge,
shivering small new born leaves
sway in the cold wind.

Orange-hued weird clouds
on a livid dusky sky,
announce the next storm.

Vigorous brush strokes
blend red with yellow and blue -
an artist's palette.

A smooth silky shawl
around my naked shoulders,
recalls dad's warm hug.

Spread wings of white gulls
against a greyish winter sky
skim water ripples.

Small sparrows' swift claws
sink scared into the shiny
white mantle of snow.

Conveying dim details
through stylish dark field glasses,
in fancy notebooks.

Mossy green pine tops
raising from behind tiled roofs
wave in the cool breeze.

Through pearl grey curtains,
white beams of glittering light
cheer up my lone lunch.

Show deep devotion,
the highest satisfaction,
kittens' joyful purrs.

Stemmed cinnamon sticks, cloves,
star-anice, acorns, pine cones,
bound together by golden wires,
lie as a whole on a dried orange slice;
embellished
by velvety bright red ribbons,
tiny ochre leaves,
a silken touch of sapphire beads -
warm atmosphere
in a spicy composition.

Cranberry clusters
elegantly hang over
a glass of red wine.

Muffins, cream puffs, round
a candied panettone -
New Year's tastiness.
